Running.  She was always running.  Though, given that she was someone who had a habit for acquiring items through less than legal means, she understood it.  Not that this made her enjoy it anymore.

“Stop!  Thief!” she heard someone exclaim.  Turning her head, her obsidian hair whipping, she collided with a solid wall of giant and fell.

Sprawled on the ground, she looked up through twilight bangs.  The giant loomed over her, arms crossed, glaring at her with his pig eyes.  She began backing up, as the guards closed in through the crowd, her hand brushed against something round and metallic.  A bright blue flash, and she was gone.

There were gasps around her.  Looking down at her hand, she found the amulet pulsing blue.  They could not see her, not wanting to see if they could touch her, she got up and slinked away, picking pockets as she passed.

The spell sank deeply into her fractured soul.  As it did so, she began to transform.  Her face elongated to become a muzzle; she dropped down to all fours; and ashen fur grew along her skin, with her hair shortening to match it.

The magic did not hurt as she had been expecting it to.  Instead of feeling bones cracking and rearranging, she just felt warmth and power flowing through her.

“There you go, lassie,” a thick Irish brogue said from above her.   Looking above and behind, she found an antlered man in leafy brown robes.  “Go on,” he said as he waved her away.

Raising her muzzle, she added her howl to the night silence, and then loped off.

The spell sank deeply within her fractured soul and began working at transforming her.  Where once she had a vermillion fin, she now had two legs.  Her hair lightened to almost white, still retaining some of its sapphire tint.  The gills hidden behind her ears smoothed out to natural skin, while her lungs became unable to obtain oxygen from water.

Gasping, she gulped down water, realizing with horror her mistake.  She strained with her newfound legs to swim towards the surface.  They just did not work the same as her fin!  Stretching out her hand towards the surface, her vision narrowed and darkened at the edges.  She felt herself being pulled back down, her chest constricting with the pressure.

Frantically struggling, her breathing became more labored.  All too fast, her movements became weaker.  Falling unconscious, she heard maniacal laughter.
A couple of these were entered into OfOneSoul 's Forum Writing Contest for the week of September 18 thru September 24.  Let me talk about each of them in turn:

1.) This is the one that first came to mind when I read the theme and rules.  It's another take on thieves and magic.  I had a lot of fun writing it, and it's the one that taught me a lot about editing my own work and being more descriptive in things.

2.) This one was inspired by another work of mine, Transformation ( TransformationBones rending into place
Muscle and sinew growing
Excruciating pain everywhere
A scream turns into a howl
A muzzle materializes
Where none had been before
Standing on four legs
Instead of two
Fur emerges along my body
The night seen through clearer eyes
My body hums
With the magic
Of the Transformation
).  It's another take on transforming and has a bit of Celtic mythology rolled into it.  This one was not entered into the contest, but the first line also inspired my next story.

3.) This one uses the same first line as the previous story, but takes it in a different direction.  This one my fiancee really loved and was the one I entered out of the two.  Both stories are a bit of a play on "be careful what you wish for," but this one was also inspired by The Little Mermaid.  It's a bit of a darker take on the latter inspiration.

I hope you all enjoy these!  And thank you to OfOneSoul for hosting the contest!  I look forward to many more!
